Black Forest Cake Ingredients

  • Cake:
  • 5 eggs
  • 3 egg yolks
  • ⅔ cup sugar
  • 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup cake flour
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoonsunsweetened cocoa powder
  • Syrup:
  • ⅓ cup water
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons kirsch or other cherry liqueur
  • Filling:
  • 1½ cups cherry pie filling
  • 3 tablespoons kirsch or other cherry liqueur
  • Frosting and Garnish:
  • 2½ cups heavy cream, whipped
  • 12 ounces dark chocolate, shaved

How Do You Make Black Forest Cake: Step By Step

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease three 8-inch cake pans and line the bottomsof each with a circle of waxed paper.
  • To make the cake, combine the eggs, egg yolks, and sugar in a medium mixingbowl and beat with an electric mixer until the mixture is light and thickened.Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and the cocoa powder.Gradually stir the dry ingredients into the egg mixture. Mix until well blended.
  • Pour equal amounts of the batter into each of the cake pans and bake in thecenter of the hot oven for 18 to 20 minutes, until the cake springs back whentouched in the middle.
  • Let the cake layers cool for at least 10 minutes before removing them from thepans.
  • Make the syrup and filling while the cakes are baking: For the syrup, combinethe water and sugar in a small saucepan and bring the mixture to a boil.Remove the pan from the heat immediately and let the syrup cool. Stir in thekirsch and set aside. For the filling, mix the cherry pie filling and the kirsch in asmall bowl and set aside.
  • To assemble and frost the cake, put one of the cake layers on a cake plate. Brushthe surface with some of the syrup, then spoon on some of the cherry pie fillingin an even layer.
  • Repeat with the second layer of cake, then top with the final cake layer andbrush it with the syrup.
  • Frost the top of the cake with a thick layer of the whipped cream, leaving thesides plain.
  • Sprinkle the entire top of the cake with the shaved chocolate and refrigerate forat least 1 hour.
